The army announced that it would deploy thousands of soldiers to assist in the clean-up operation. Environmental groups spoke of a disaster as they showed images of tar-covered turtles.

A ship that passed on February 11 may be the cause of the pollution. Environmental Protection Minister Gila Gamliel said it was looking at nine ships that were in the vicinity. She thinks there is a good chance that the responsible ship will be found. The damage could then be recovered from the owner or his insurer.

Twitter is talking about the largest oil spill in the country’s history.
