Beaches in Egypt closed after deadly shark attack – Africa

They closed several beaches in Egypt after an Austrian woman died in a shark attack near the resort of Hurghada, reported Reuters, quoted by BTV.

The 68-year-old woman was swimming near the resort when the sea predator attacked her.

The victim was transferred to a local private hospital immediately after the attack, a source from the Directorate of Health Affairs in the Red Sea told Reuters. He adds that there were resuscitation attempts, but she died.

A video circulating online purportedly shows the woman being attacked by a Mako shark relatively close to shore. In the video, the water around the woman turns red with blood as passersby on the pier throw her a life jacket. It remains unclear how she managed to reach the shore.

The woman has been living in Egypt for the past five years with her Egyptian husband.

All “marine activities,” including diving, snorkeling and windsurfing, are banned, according to an internal document from the Red Sea province governor’s office provided to The Associated Press. Fishing vessels are also prohibited from sailing in the waters off Hurghada.
