Beach Volleyball Olympic Champion Laura Ludwig Makes Comeback, Reaches Quarterfinals in Edmonton Challenge Tournament

Beach volleyball Olympic champion Laura Ludwig has achieved her best result since her baby break. With her partner Louisa Lippmann, she reached the quarterfinals of the Challenge tournament in Edmonton, Canada. There the duo was eliminated on Saturday by a 2-1 defeat (26:24, 15:21, 10:15) against the Czechs Barbora Hermannova and Marie-Sara Stochlova.

The 37-year-old Berliner Ludwig, who won Olympic gold with Kira Walkenhorst in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, returned to the sand for the second time after the birth of her second child last November.

For Ludwig and Lippmann, the tournament was part of the preparation for the European Championships in Vienna (August 2nd to 6th). There are four other German duos at the start: Svenja Müller/Cinja Tillmann (Hamburg/Düsseldorf), Karla Borger/Sandra Ittlinger (Düsseldorf), the young athletes Leonie Körtzinger/Lea Kunst (Hamburg) and the men’s national team Nils Ehlers/Clemens Wickler (Hamburg).

The long-term goal of the Ludwig/Lippmann duo is to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
