The European beach volleyball champions Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann just missed their next tournament victory. A good week after their European Championship triumph in the Netherlands, the German duo lost in the final of the Elite16 tournament at the Rothenbaum in Hamburg.

The Hamburg team lost 1:2 (18:21, 21:18, 16:18) to the Swiss Tanja Hüberli and Nina Brunner on Sunday. For Müller and Tillmann it would have been the second victory on the Pro Tour this season. The German champions had already won the tournament in Vienna shortly before the Summer Games. Only last weekend Müller/Tillmann had taken the European crown and celebrated the greatest success of their careers.

Two match points not used

The German champions also performed strongly at home and did not lose a set in the matches before the final. In the final, the duo even earned two match points after a strong comeback, but ultimately had to admit defeat.

Ludwig celebrated frenetically

Müller and Tillmann won the German duel with Laura Ludwig and Louisa Lippmann in the round of the last eight on Saturday evening with 21:15, 21:18. For Rio Olympic champion Ludwig, it was the last appearance on the international stage. She had announced her retirement after the Olympic Games in Paris. Next weekend, the Berlin native will give her farewell performance at the German Championships in Timmendorf.

Ehlers/Wickler and Just/Henning eliminated

In the men’s competition, local hero Maximilian Just (St. Pauli) was eliminated in the round of 16 alongside Paul Henning (DJK Düsseldorf). The duo had to admit defeat to the Australian combination Izac Carracher/Mark Nicolaidis with 1:2 (21:13, 19:21, 10:15). Olympic silver medalists Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler were also eliminated. The Hamburg team could not compete in their intermediate round match against the Dutch Steven van de Velde and Matthew Immerse.

Ehlers injured his left ankle in the first group match on Thursday – but the duo still won, which was enough to advance. The local heroes had cancelled the other two matches in their group.

Men’s final without German participation

The Norwegians Anders Berntsen Mol/Christian Sandlie Sörum prevailed in the final on Sunday. They won 2:0 (21:15, 21:11) against the Spanish duo Pablo Herrera Allepuz/Adrián Gavira Collado.
