Beach handball players no longer have to play in swimsuits

The International Handball Federation has heard criticism and changed the rules under which beach handball players have had to play in swimsuits. The IHF acknowledged objections, mostly from Scandinavian countries, that the regulation was sexist, and allowed women as well as men to wear shorts. These must not be too loose and must end 10 cm above the knees.

At the Summer European Championships, the Norwegians were fined 1,500 euros (roughly 40,000 crowns) for inappropriate clothing after wearing shorts. The Norwegian Minister of Sport subsequently described the decision as completely ridiculous. The representatives were also supported, for example, by the American singer Pink, who offered to pay the fine.

In the past, beach volleyball players solved a similar problem, who previously could only play in bikinis with a maximum width of 7 cm, or in one-piece swimsuits. In 2012, the FIVB World Federation amended the rules to allow women from countries where significant detection is not allowed for religious reasons to play beach volleyball.
