There are no bad weather conditions for cycling, but there is insufficient equipment for the bike or the rider himself!
More and more people, focusing on a healthy lifestyle, go cycling on a daily basis, even in the dark months of the year. This fall season is especially grateful to cyclists. However, cyclists have not always taken care of their safety. Therefore, the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD), the association “City for People” and the retail company “Narvesen” in a joint campaign “Light up the bicycle!” calls on cyclists to equip bicycles with headlights and reflectors, and to wear clothing with reflective elements.
During the campaign, those cyclists whose cars will not be equipped with flashlights will receive a set of lights, from which the white light can be attached to the front of the bike, and the red light – to the rear. In turn, those cyclists who have illuminated the bicycle accordingly will receive a coffee voucher given by Narvesen.
The first cycling lighting event will take place today, November 4, in Riga, from 16.30, at the intersection of Brīvības and Gustavs Zemgala streets.
If the bicycle is equipped with headlights or reflectors, it shall be visible in road traffic from a distance of at least 150 meters. On the other hand, if the bicycle does not have any light elements, the driver notices it at the last minute and may no longer be able to react and brake in time.
Such an “unlit” situation is the reason for many tragedies on Latvian roads, which take place in the dark months of the year. Statistics compiled by the State Police show that in the 10 months of this year, 13 cyclists have already died in road traffic accidents, compared to 5 last year.
