Kabar6-ologists and astronomy scientists conducted experiments in two different places that have similar conditions to Mars, that is at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah, United States (US), and Nunavut territory, Canada, known for its harsh climate.
The research mission, named Mars 160, lasted for one year, from 2016 to 2017, with the aim of assessing the possibility of life on Mars, both in the past and in the future, which as well as studying how micro-organisms can survive in harsh environments such as those on the red planet.
The study of moss biodiversity in places similar to Mars also aims to assess the ability of moss species to survive in environments very similar to Martian conditions, including very low temperatures, radiation high and some water available.
Researchers studied, studied and documented various possible microbial life on Mars, especially species of lichens, which are thought to be able to live on Mars.
As a result, according to sciTechDaily, lichens are the most likely organisms to live on Mars. This moss can survive in poor environmental conditions or with few resources available. In this experiment, the researchers looked at micro-habitats at two simulated stations on Mars.
They used spacesuits to interact and explore the different micro-environments that surround the two stations, each located in desert and arctic environments that closely resemble Martian conditions.
In addition, the researchers collected several species of moss that can grow in several micro-habitats found in those two places. More than 150 moss samples were collected, which were then processed and analyzed at the National Herbarium of Canada located at the Canadian Museum of Nature.
From the results of this research, scientists identified 35 moss species from the Mars Desert Research Station and another 13 species from the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station.
This discovery is very important because it shows that lichens can grow and thrive in conditions similar to Mars, providing strong evidence that this species could be one of the main candidates in efforts to find life. found on Mars (ilj/bbs).
