Be Careful! This SMS is not from WhatsApp, but a digital thief

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Recently the Cyber Crime Directorate (Dittipidsiber) revealed a new mode of fraud in cyberspace. This time it involved a message that was claimed to be from the short message platform, WhatsApp.

“Fraudsters never run out of ways to ensnare their victims, including through fraudulent messages sent by SMS. One form of SMS fraud is on behalf of the popular messaging application, WhatsApp,” said Siber Polri, quoted Wednesday (5/5/2021).

The perpetrator will send an SMS to the potential victim. It is said that the victim’s WhatsApp number wins a prize of hundreds of millions of rupiah.

At the end of the SMS message will contain a link for the victim to be asked to click on it. In the screenshot uploaded by Siber Polri, there is no certainty that the message came from WhatsApp.

The link in the message is suspected by the Police to be a fraud mode with the aim of stealing the victim’s account.

Siber Polri also shared ways to avoid becoming a victim of this phishing. That is, people are asked not to press the link in the message.

Because Siber Polri said the message was not sent from the technology giant. The public has the potential to become victims by pressing the link.

“Given that the message is not sent directly by WhatsApp, there is a possibility that the link will trap consumers, as in many cases of phishing,” added Siber Polri.

For information, Dittipidsiber is a work unit under Bareskrim Polri. Its job is to enforce the law on cyber crime. Dittipidsiber handles two crimes, namely computer crime and computer-related crime.
