Studies published by British Medical Journal, found that severe eczema in adults was associated with an increased risk of heart attack, atrial fibrillation, and stroke.
Reported from Express, a team led by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine analyzed data on more than 385,000 adults with atopic eczema.
These data were cross-checked with patients who did not have eczema. Patients were assigned to mild, moderate or severe atopic eczema groups and monitored for a median of five years.
Major cardiovascular incidents were recorded during follow-up, including heart attack, unstable angina, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, stroke, and cardiovascular death.
Research findings reveal that patients diagnosed with severe eczema have a 20 percent increased risk of stroke and a 40 to 50 percent increased risk of heart attack, atrial fibrillation, and cardiovascular death.
Study results remained consistent after all underlying factors were taken into account. Researchers say severe active atopic eczema is associated with an increased cardiovascular risk.
