Be careful, taking painkillers continuously can trigger kidney disease

Pain relievers can cause kidney problems if used incorrectly.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — When feeling dizzy, feverish, or painful, some people quickly take pain relievers (pain killer). Drugs called analgesics are actually effective and safe for consumption. However, when used inappropriately, painkillers can cause problems in the body, including the kidneys.

The general chairman of the Indonesian Nephrology Association (Pernefri), Dr. Aida Lydia, PhD, SpPD-KGH, explained that certain drugs can cause kidney problems. However, drugs for hypertension and diabetes are safe. These two diseases are the most common causes of chronic kidney disease.

“Drugs that are dangerous are painkillers because if they are consumed in high amounts or continuously, in the long term they can interfere with the kidneys,” said Dr. Aida at the Healthy Kidney for All webinar organized by the Indonesian Dialysis Patient Community and Etana Biotech. , Thursday (10/3/2022).

Dr. Aida reminded to avoid taking over-the-counter medicines regularly without consulting a doctor. Analgesic drugs must be used as prescribed.

“If there is rheumatism, the knee hurts, painkillers are certainly needed, but must follow the doctor’s instructions,” he said.
