Be careful if you experience continuous or intermittent swelling and bone pain in a specific place on your body for a long period of time. There is no need to worry or get paranoid, but it is advisable to investigate the situation. In fact, this is the main symptom of primary bone cancer, which however is not very widespread in Italy (1 case out of 100,000, as reported from the AIRC), as opposed to bone metastases, deriving from other tumors such as that of the breast, of the prostate or of the lung.
If you have reason to suspect that the swelling and bone pain do not derive from other causes, therefore, it is advisable to contact your doctor who, following a thorough examination, will decide whether it is necessary to prescribe specific in-depth examinations: an x-ray of the region suspected, a bone scan or PET scan, after which a bone biopsy will be performed, which will allow you to determine with certainty if you are in the presence of cancer. Classification
It is defined:
a) metastatic, if the cancer cells have arrived in other parts of the body;
b) localized, when the tumor cells are confined to the bone, where the tumor originated;
c) relapsing, when the disease occurs again in the same place where the cancer originated, or elsewhere.
Main treatments against the disease
The treatment to be taken for osteosarcoma and other bone cancers depends on a few factors.
a) Aggression and stage of the disease;
b) surgery where possible;
c) results of the analyzes performed;
d) general health conditions of the patient.
Among the main treatments for bone cancer are: surgery and chemotherapy. Systemic chemotherapy is performed for osteosarcoma. The drug enters the blood and spreads throughout the body. Surgery is usually done after a few courses of chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumor. After the surgery, other cycles are performed, with the aim of destroying any remaining tumor cells.
