Be careful, fake WhatsApp applications threaten Apple users: Okezone techno

TORONTO – Research team cyber security from the University of Toronto, Citizen Lab, together with a team from Motherboard, revealed the existence of the application Fake WhatsApp on an iOS device.

Launch from Gadgets 360, Saturday (6/2/2021), the fake application was known to have been created by an Italian surveillance company called Cy4Gate, and was targeting certain users.

The way of the crime is to trick the victim into installing certain configuration files that are on Apple-made equipment. Then, hackers infiltrate and collect information belonging to their victims.

Information that can be obtained by hackers includes Unique Device Identifier (UDID) and device IMEI number.

The fake WhatsApp application on iOS began to surface after security company ZecOps tweeted a series of attacks detected in the instant messaging application.

According to Motherboard, this fake WhatsApp on Apple devices was created to gather information about the victim, and then send it back to the hackers.

In order to deceive his victims, these cybercriminals include the WhatsApp logo and graphics that look very professional. They also provide instructions to the user, on how to install configuration files on Apple’s platform to install the fake application.
