Public Urged to be Aware of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) During Long Dry Season
Karawang, West Java – The Karawang District Health Office in West Java has called on the public to be aware of the potential increase in cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) during the long dry season. Yayuk Sri Rahayu, Head of Disease Prevention and Control of the Karawang Health Service, emphasized the need for vigilance against disease attacks during this period.
“People must be aware of disease attacks during a long dry season like today,” said Yayuk Sri Rahayu in Karawang on Thursday. Dry weather conditions, exacerbated by the El Nino phenomenon, can trigger a surge in dengue cases.
From January to the second week of June 2023, Karawang has already recorded 507 cases of dengue, with four fatalities. The data from the Karawang Health Office shows that in January, there were 68 reported cases, followed by 85 cases in February, 101 cases in March, 87 cases in April, 109 cases in May, and 57 cases in June.
Yayuk Sri Rahayu highlighted that the majority of DHF sufferers were aged between 15 and 44 years old. Children under the age of one accounted for two percent of cases, while those aged 1-4 years accounted for 12 percent, and ages 5-14 years accounted for 29 percent.
To prevent the spread of dengue, Yayuk Sri Rahayu urged the public to practice the 3M Plus approach, which includes draining and brushing stagnant water, closing water reservoirs, utilizing or recycling used goods, and taking measures to prevent mosquito bites and breeding.
In addition to the threat of dengue, the Regional Disaster Management Agency for Karawang Regency also warned of potential droughts and water shortages in several areas due to the El Nino phenomenon. Mahpudin, Head of the Karawang Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), identified five sub-districts that are prone to drought during the long dry season, including Tegalwaru District, West Telukjambe, Ciampel, Pangkalan, and Pakisjaya District.
Specifically, in Tegalwaru District, Kutalanggeng and Cintalanggeng Villages are usually affected by drought during the dry season. Jatilaksana Village in Pangkalan District and Wanajaya Village in Telukjambe Barat District, along with Wanakerta and its surroundings, are also at risk.
The public is advised to take necessary precautions to combat both dengue and drought, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
