BCCI should change that rule from IPL, otherwise the Indian team will have to work eight; Jafar with warning Southlive

Former Indian opener and Punjab Kings batting coach Wasim Jaffer wants BCCI to remove impact player rule from IPL. The BCCI introduced the Impact Player Rule in the 2023 season. It allows the franchises to replace a player in the playing XI and field a substitute during the match. The incoming player can contribute with bat and ball.

I think the IPL impact player rule should be scrapped. Because it doesn’t encourage all-rounders to bowl more. Lack of all-rounders is a concern for Indian cricket. Impact player rule is not good for all-rounders.

Earlier, franchises included at least one all-rounder in the playing eleven. The availability of more all-rounders has benefited the composition of the team. Now, teams play with six specialist batsmen and five bowlers and field an extra batter or bowler as per the impact player rule.

This law is expected to affect India in the long run. This rule does not exist in international cricket. The Men in Blue have been able to find only one all-rounder in the form of Hardik Pandya in the last few years, Jaffer pointed out.

The impact of the impact player rule is likely to be seen in the IPL 2024 auction on December 19. Franchises are likely to ditch all-rounders and spend more on specialist batsmen and bowlers when the new system comes in.
