After Scotland Berlin, Hamburg Towers upset the BBL’s next best team, Bayern Munich. In the end, Bayern won in the last second. At the same time, the Berliners showed that they had overcome Oldenburg and celebrated a clear home win.
With a layup by Devin Booker one second before the end, Munich won 81:80 (42:41) against Hamburg Towers in Bundesliga Basketball on Sunday (September 29, 2024). The hosts gave the German champions a heated duel on their first home visit in their new arena and led to the final stage.
When Keondre Kennedy scored with eight seconds left to give the Towers an 80-79 lead, it looked like another upset. But Booker, who was also Bayern’s top scorer with 19 points, made it a happy ending for Munich. Brae Ivey also had 19 points for Hamburg, which now has one win and one loss.
Berlin ensures clear conditions
Scotland Berlin had already reset for the first defeat in Hamburg on Saturday. It is clear that the weakened Berliners won their first home game in front of 9,000 spectators against Baskets Oldenburg with 105:70 (48:39).
Martin Hermannsson with 20 and Trevion Williams with 16 points were the best shooters in Berlin. Coach Israel Gonzalez missed a quintet in Gabriele Procida (ankle), Matt Thomas (knee), Malte Delow (concussion), Tim Schneider (eye surgery) and Ziga Samar (rehabilitation after Achilles tendon rupture). Nevertheless, the Berliners got off to a strong start. New captain Hermannsson was particularly convincing, scoring the first nine points in Berlin on his own.
Oldenburg undermines himself with fouls
The capital city outplayed the visitors in the first quarter and pulled away early after a 17-0 run. At times Scotland was leading by 19 points (28:9). But then the guests woke up and now they hit their shots. Scotland did not defend as consistently anymore and it was more difficult to attack her. The lead was down to nine points before the break.
After the break, Scotland increased the intensity again, found better solutions in attack and defended with more attention. In addition, Oldenburg’s Geno Crandall and Justin Jaworski were ejected early in the third quarter with five fouls. At the start of the last section, Scotland had moved forward again to 19 points (78:59). Eventually the hosts completely fell apart and Scotland had an easy time.
Rostock celebrates its second victory of the season
Later in the evening the Rostock Seawolves celebrated their second win in the second league game. The North Germans even scored more than 100 points in their 102:74 win against BG Göttingen, who were still winless.
The Telekom Baskets Bonn also defeated MBC Weißenfels with 95:80. Vechta had to admit that he lost 74:80 in Heidelberg.
