Central Saint Martins (CSM) in London, the school where designers such as Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Stella McCartney and Phoebe Philo trained, will be the destination for 16 young people from Biscay who are building a future for themselves under the umbrella of Bilbao Art&Fashion (BIAAF). This Biscayan organisation has been promoting the most important competition for young designers in the world for almost a decade. Some of them are already working for major firms, others have set up their own businesses and a small group of lucky ones, aged between 18 and 35, will enjoy scholarships financed by the BBK Foundation to complete their training at one of the most elite design schools, alongside Parsons in New York.
Among the aspects that this course will cover are creative direction, technical processes, construction methodologies, innovation and experimentation. Students will also work on visualisation, 3D documentation of processes and pattern making. “All with the intention that prototypes can be materialised at the end of the course in garments with the chosen fabrics,” says Charo Alvarez, director of BIAFF. This programme will facilitate access for BIAAF creators to the ‘Transmissions’ programme, an initiative of the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum that seeks to “discover the work, technique and values” of the brilliant Gipuzkoan creator with “current and future designers.”
Crucial support
The support of the BBK is considered crucial in the objective of “launching” young talents into the world of fashion. The Biscayans will have the opportunity to work side by side with Stephanie Cooper, Robert G. Leach, Alexis Panayiotou, Jill Martin and, especially, Elisa Palomino, a renowned designer, educator and researcher with more than 25 years of experience in major brands. Palomino will help emerging designers “show their identity, their technical skills and their ability to innovate.” The same reason that motivated the 1,402 contestants from 90 countries on five continents to enter the 9th BIAAF International Fashion Design Competition, which was won by the Swedish designer Belinda Gredig.
