London ∙ BBC reports that those who work as caregivers in the UK are vulnerable to labor exploitation. Balakrishnan Balagopal, a Malayali reporter, worked as a care assistant in an elderly care center and collected the information. The report says nurses are locked into contracts and face fines if they try to quit. 1.40 lakh foreigners have been granted visas to the health and care sector in the UK in one year. 39,000 of them are Indians.
The BBC’s report on the issue comes less than a week after the publication of the UK’s Migration Advisory Council’s annual report warning of exploitation in the field. The report of the Immigration Advisory Committee states that the requirement of employer sponsorship for skilled work visas provides a loophole for exploitation. They have suggested that the government should start a portal to help find vacancies and change jobs in this sector. A higher minimum wage is also recommended. The government’s position on the recommendations is not clear. Earlier this month, the government had clarified that from April, those arriving on health and care worker visas will not be able to bring their spouse or children with them on a dependent visa.
