The star of the “Avengers” series, Jeremy Renner, said that the accident he had during the January snow period was his fault and that he paid for it.
Renner broke more than 30 bones when he tried to prevent the car from running over his nephew on New Year’s Day.
Renner’s first full interview since the accident was broadcast last Thursday on ABC, in which he said: “You shouldn’t be out of the car while it’s running, you know what I mean? It’s like driving the car with one foot out.” He added, “It was my mistake, and I paid for it.” .”
Renner, 52, is best known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Universe, and has been nominated for two Oscars.
In the interview, Renner told ABC’s Diane Sawyer that he and his nephew Alex, 27, were trying to pull the family’s truck out of the snow using a six-and-a-half-ton vehicle.
He added that when the truck started to slide on the ice, he put his foot outside the car to check if Alex was standing in the road, without adjusting the brakes, but his foot slipped and he fell out of the car.
“I just happened to be the dummy standing in the way of the truck to see if my nephew was standing there.”
Fearing that Alex might get wedged between the car and the truck, Renner tried to jump again to stop the truck, but it pushed him forward and he was run over. He said he then screamed as he got under the truck.
When asked if he remembered the pain, he replied: “Yes! I was awake every moment, it’s hard to imagine that feeling, as if someone took your soul from you.”
Describing the feeling of pain, Renner said, “Pain is everything. It’s like your soul feels pain.”
Renner recalls the thoughts that invaded him at the time, when he realized that his foot caused the accident, and he continues, “I told myself that this foot is the cause, and it will be a problem later, and I began to think, what will my body look like? Will I be just a spine and a brain like a science experiment?”
However, after three months of intensive therapy, Renner on the ABC show was able to walk using a walking frame.
No regret
In the TV interview with Sawyer, Renner says that when he woke up in the hospital he referred to his family as an attempt to apologize to them.
“I felt bad because what I did caused me so much pain,” he added, noting that hearing his family’s memories of the accident was “terrifying.” Describing his interaction with his family, he said, “This is true love, even though it was suffering, but it nurtured the seeds of love.”
Renner said he had no regrets and would do it again, refusing to be “in any way haunted by the memory.”
He added, “I refuse to let this be a trauma or a negative experience. This is the feeling of strength that I am most proud of, because I could not allow this to happen to my nephew.”
In addition to playing Hawkeye in the popular “Marvel” series and participating in the Disney + series, Renner participated in “The Hurt Locker”, “Arrival”, “Bourne Legacy”, and in two parts in Mission: Impossible, as well as the TV series Mayor of Kingstown.
