BBC chairman Richard Sharp tendered his resignation on Friday. Sharp announced his resignation after an investigation by a British regulator found that he had broken the rules. Shortly before his appointment, he had helped then Prime Minister Boris Johnson obtain a loan of 800,000 pounds (over 900,000 euros).
The National Watchdog on Public Appointments investigated how Sharp was selected by the government to become BBC chairman in 2021. It emerged that this breach does not invalidate his nomination, even though he broke the rules by not disclosing a potential conflict of interest.
But despite that conclusion, Sharp says he does not want to complete his four-year term, because staying on would distract from the BBC’s “good work”. “I have decided it is right to prioritize the interests of the BBC,” the statement said.
Sharp has agreed to a request to stay on until the end of June to give the government time to find a successor.
