The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) apologized, after an “inappropriate” question asked by its correspondent to the most prominent player in the Moroccan national team, at a press conference on the sidelines of its match with Germany in the Women’s World Cup.
A BBC journalist asked the captain of the national team, Ghizlane Chebbak, if the Moroccan national team includes “lesbian” players, and how life is for them in their country.
And with the surprise that befell the Moroccan national team player, the FIFA official who attended the conference intervened, saying: “I’m sorry. This is a very political question. We will only stick to football-related questions, please.”
But the reporter insisted on getting an answer. “The question is not political. It’s about people. It has nothing to do with politics.”
However, the BBC issued an apology saying it was “aware that the question was inappropriate”, and a spokesperson said on Tuesday that “the BBC had no intention of causing harm”.
The Moroccan national team suffered a heavy defeat against its German counterpart, 6-0, on Monday, in the Women’s World Cup, which is hosted by New Zealand.
Seven months after the men’s national team reached the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Morocco became the first Arab team to play a match in the Women’s World Cup.
The Moroccan players hope to achieve a better result in the next confrontation against South Korea.
