London: The BBC has suspended a news anchor for allegedly buying pornographic images from a teenage girl. The Sun newspaper reported that the girl’s mother said she had been paid £35,000 since 2020 to buy the pictures. But no details of the host have been revealed.
Although the age of consent for sex in Britain is 16, making or possessing indecent images of people under 18 is an offence.
The girl’s family filed a complaint with the BBC on May 19. But The Sun reports that the BBC is not ready to move the presenter immediately. The family demanded that the presenter stop sending money. The family also says that the relative uses the money given by the presenter for drugs.
The BBC said in a statement that it is taking the allegation seriously. The BBC has confirmed that the news presenter has been suspended.
UK Culture Secretary Lucy Fraser tweeted that she had spoken to BBC Director General Tim Davie about the incident. Lucy also said that Tim promised to investigate the incident as soon as possible.
She added that given the nature of the allegation, the BBC should be given sufficient time to verify the facts and investigate and take action.
Rachel Reeves, Labour’s finance spokeswoman, said the BBC should speed up their process.
According to a statement released by the London Metropolitan Police on Sunday, the BBC contacted the incident. Police said they need more information before deciding what action to take.
