BBB, Groninger Belang, PvdA, and ChristenUnie Form New Provincial Government in Groningen

BBB, Groninger Belang, PvdA and ChristenUnie will govern in Groningen for the next four years. The four parties concluded negotiations on the new provincial government on Wednesday. Groningen is the sixth province where the formation has been completed.

The parties will present the outline agreement and the portfolio allocation within the new College of Provincial Executive on Thursday morning. This will happen at a press conference in the Groningen provincial house.

Formateur Ard van der Tuuk, the mayor of the Groningen municipality of Westerkwartier, will explain the agreement together with negotiators from the four governing parties.

BBB, Groninger Belang, PvdA and ChristenUnie together won 23 of the 43 seats in the Provincial Council during the elections in March. BBB made by far the largest gain with 12 seats. The party previously announced that it would nominate two deputies.

The local party Groninger Belang takes its place in the provincial government for the first time. Party chairman Bram Schmaal has been put forward by the party as a director in the college. On behalf of the PvdA and the ChristenUnie, their current deputies can prepare for a new term.

Four years ago, the formation in Groningen lasted 2 months. It now took more than 3.5 months to reach an agreement.
