Bazaar statistics: Second-hand markets continue to decline and their prices are rising by tens of thousands

In September, the price of used second-hand goods on the Czech market increased by CZK 23,000 year-on-year to a median value of CZK 169,000. The reason is the lack of cars on offer, with around 80,000 cars missing in the Visegrad Four countries compared to last year. Compared to August, 4,500 cars were lost. This follows from the analysis of AAA Auto used cars.

The largest increase is evident in the Hungarian market, where the median bid prices rose by more than 27,000 crowns, in Slovakia by more than 20,000 CZK and in Poland by 16,000 CZK.

“The drop in supply has been evident for several months in a row and so far there is no indication that the situation could improve in the near future. The primary car market is still struggling with supply chain problems their fleets, and therefore no new used vehicles are entering the market, “said Petr Vaněček, operations director of Aures Holdings, which operates AAA Auto.

According to Jakub Šulty from the Carvago online marketplace, the market in Europe is the least used in the last five years. “The price of a used car sold has risen by an average of five to six percent, and even by thirteen percent for the most sought-after models. There is no indication that the situation should change in the foreseeable future,” confirms AAA Auto’s conclusions.

Šulta also claims that the prices of used cars are pushing up and the rising prices of new ones. According to him, combustion plants are more expensive due to the fact that manufacturers are forced to invest in electric cars, and dealers with limited stocks do not give discounts.

“Warehouse cars thus disappear by the next day at the latest, and one new vehicle is often waiting for ten people. Many customers return from brick-and-mortar stores with no purchase – or with a car they didn’t want to buy at all and paid more for it than they should, “claims Šulta.

The situation is also affected by the number of used cars imported from Western European countries. For example, in the Czech Republic, 2324 fewer cars were imported by August compared to the pre-predictive year 2019. According to Vaněček, cars are missing throughout Europe, and so even second-hand used cars are entering the market, for example from the recent floods in Germany.

The Škoda Octavia remains the most frequently offered car in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with a total offer of over 11,000 cars; in Poland and Hungary, the Opel Astra is the leader with a total of 7,900 offers.

The average age was highest in September for cars sold in Poland (12.3 years), followed by Hungary (11.4 years), the Czechia (ten years) and the youngest cars in Slovakia (9.9 years). The condition of the tachometer is again the highest in Poland (median 181,321 km), the least used are cars in the Czech Republic (median 149,521 km).
