Bayreuth Richard Wagner Festival Sees Record Attendance and Sold-Out Performances

Bayreuth/Berlin (MH) – The Bayreuth Richard Wagner Festival attracted more than 58,000 visitors this year. The total occupancy of all 31 performances was 97 percent, as the organizers announced on Tuesday. The 19 performances of the individual works – “Parsifal”, “Tannhäuser”, “Tristan and Isolde” and “The Flying Dutchman” – were sold out. The three “ring” cycles averaged 92 percent utilization.

“Parsifal”

For the first time, the Bayreuth Festival offered a contingent of discounted tickets for young people up to the age of 25. The demand for the “Wagner for Starters” tickets was “extremely high”, it said.

More than 5,000 guests experienced an open-air concert in the festival park, a second had to be canceled due to the weather. This year, the “Wagner for Children” project presented its own version of the opera “Parsifal” with ten performances.

The 112th edition of the festival will open on July 25, 2024 with a new production of “Tristan und Isolde”. The director is Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson from Iceland, and Semyon Bychkov is the musical director. The title roles will be sung by Camilla Nylund and Andreas Schager. “Parsifal” will be revived with Pablo Heras-Casado conducting, “Tannhäuser” with conductor Nathalie Stutzmann, “The Flying Dutchman” conducted by Oksana Lyniv and “Ring des Nibelungen” directed by Valentin Schwarz with conductor Philippe Jordan. In 2025 Daniele Gatti is scheduled to conduct a new production of the “Meistersinger von Nürnberg”.
