Faced with the increase in cases of contamination with monkeypox, preventive vaccination for those most exposed to the virus is now offered. Two sites are open in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. In Bayonne, at the Sexual Health Screening Center of the Basque Coast Hospital Center and in Pau, at the Hospital Center Vaccination Center.

The High Authority published, at the beginning of July, a list of people at risk. It concerns today men having relations with other men, people in a situation of prostitution, trans people with multiple sexual partners, and professionals in places of sexual consumption. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and rash (macules, papules, and pustules) on the body.

WHO maximum alert

As of July 21, 1,567 cases were confirmed in France, including 72 in New Aquitaine. They are mostly men. Two days later, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued high alert in response to the propensity of monkeypox patients. Since the beginning of May, almost 17,000 cases have been counted, in around 75 countries.

To date, two vaccines are used, Imvanex and Jynneos, produced by Bavarian Nordic. Two doses 28 days apart are necessary, but a single dose is sufficient for
people already vaccinated against smallpox, and a third dose is recommended for those who are immunocompromised.
