This was the result of an MRI examination on Tuesday morning, the Bundesliga league leaders announced. The 23-year-old will probably be able to return to Bayer coach Xabi Alonso’s squad at the beginning of April.

Boniface suffered the injury during training with the Nigerian national team and then returned to the Werkself. The center forward will not only miss the Africa Cup (January 13th to February 11th), but also large parts of the Bundesliga second half of the season.

The attacker moved to Leverkusen from Belgian first division club Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer. Under the Bayer Cross, Boniface impressed straight away, scoring 16 goals in 23 competitive games and preparing eight more goals.
