Bayern wrestles with Hertha, but is relieved: four-hit Lewandowski

Bayern Munich has – seven days after the sensational 4-1 defeat at Hoffenheim – picked up the thread with difficulty in the Bundesliga. Der Rekordmeister gave away a 2-0 and 3-2 lead against Hertha BSC in-house, but crawled through the eye of the needle: Robert Lewandowski was the hero of the evening with four hits.

The Treble winner has a killer schedule, playing his fifth game in two weeks. The home game with Hertha got underway late in the first half: a goal by Thomas Müller was still rejected, but Lewandowski scored 1-0 moments later. After the Pole turned freely after the break and scored the 2-0, the game seemed decided.

However, Hertha soon had the connection again: Jhon Córdoba headed the ball past Manuel Neuer and helped his team to 2-1. Twenty minutes before the end it even became 2-2: Matheus Cunha combined with Krzysztof Piatek and outwitted Neuer.

Both clubs were preparing for a sensational final phase. After minute 85 it went in all directions: Lewandowski completed his hat-trick from close range, Jessic Ngankam seemed to give Hertha a festive Sunday evening with a striking header, but Lewandowski still had the last word. The Pole was pulled by Maximilian Mittelstadt’s arm in extra time and carried out the verdict himself from the penalty spot: 4-3.

Bayern climbs to fourth place in the Bundesliga, one point behind leader RB Leipzig. After the international break, it will go off again for Hansi Flick and his team: eight (!) Official matches are scheduled between 15 October and 7 November.
