Borussia Dortmund had come close to Bayern Munich by one point, but has to take another step in the battle for the Bundesliga title. Lucien Favre’s team was surprised at home by 1. FC Köln, while Der Rekordmeister did reach the full price against VfB Stuttgart.
Borussia Dortmund-1. FC Cologne 1-2
BVB had a surplus of ball possession, but could hardly do anything with it. Fresh Golden Boy Erling Braut Haaland also kept his powder dry, one week after his four-hit match against Hertha BSC. The guests from Cologne also had Ellyes Skhiri, who single-handedly lifted the score to 0-2: the Tunisian was able to work from close range before and after the break after a corner kick. Thorgan Hazard made it exciting again fifteen minutes before the end, but Dortmund did not get any further.
VfB Stuttgart-Bayern Munich 1-3
Bayern increased the gap to four points. Der Rekordmeister certainly did not have an easy time at VfB Stuttgart, but did take the points home. All goals were scored before the break: Tanguy Coulibaly made it 1-0, after which Kingsley Coman and Robert Lewandowski turned the score in Bayern’s favor in the final phase of the first half. In between, a hit from the home team was rejected. Philipp Förster scored after goalkeeper Manuel Neuer lost the ball, who, however, claimed that he was pulled by Coulibaly’s arm: the VAR ultimately agreed with him.
After the break it remained exciting and both teams had opportunities. Bayern, however, was able to breathe a sigh of relief, after Diego Costa made it 1-3 just before time. RB Leipzig beat Arminia Bielefeld 2-1 at home – thanks in part to hits from Angeliño and Christopher Nkunku – and is the new number two for the time being, at the expense of Borussia Dortmund. Peter Bosz’s Bayer Leverkusen can come back to one point from Bayern on Sunday, if it beats Hertha BSC at home.
