Germany – Borussia Dortmund will no longer hinder Bayern Munich on their way to a tenth consecutive championship title.
In the 28th round, Bayern won 4-1 in Freiburg, while BVB were humiliated 4-1 by Leipzig at home. The difference between the two rivals is nine points with six laps to go. It may only be six points because Bayern had twelve players on the field for a while in the final stages of the game in Freiburg after substitutions. The whole thing could result in a forfait defeat.
The Austrian Konrad Laimer with two goals and the French goalgetter Christopher Nkunku with his 16th goal of the season in the championship brought Leipzig 3-0 up to the 57th minute and robbed BVB of all hope. It was a sobering match for coach Marco Rose’s team – which also showed how big the gap to Bayern is in terms of performance.
Serge Gnabry, who came on after 72 minutes, needed just one minute to score the decisive 2-1 for Bayern in Freiburg. All goals came in the second half. Freiburg’s veteran goalgetter Niels Petersen was able to compensate for the first deficit.
That Freiburg draws the short straw against Bayern is the most normal thing in the history of the Bundesliga. In the last 26 years, Freiburg have only beaten Bayern once in the championship, in May 2015.
Bayer Leverkusen took advantage of Freiburg’s defeat. The team coached by Gerardo Seoane defeated Hertha Berlin 2-1 at home and put a reserve of six points on Freiburg in the scramble for places in the Champions League.
For its part, Hertha Berlin slipped to second-last place after the second match under coach Felix Magath because Arminia Bielefeld and Stuttgart drew (1-1) in a duel between two other relegation candidates.
