Munich – Again court trouble for FC Bayern – and again it’s about traffic offenses. After the Bayern bosses Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamdizic lost their driver’s license or had to tremble about it in the past few weeks, it is now affecting a player. Defense warrior Benjamin Pavard (26) has an unpleasant appointment at the Munich district court on Wednesday: There he has to answer for a drunk driving last summer.

Police pulled Bayern star Benjamin Pavard out of traffic drunk – millions of fines threatened

The Frenchman was in the car on August 4, 2022 with a blood alcohol level of 1.4 – in the middle of preparing for the new Bundesliga season, which began nine days later. At 2.36 a.m. the police stopped him on Sonnenstrasse. After the traffic check, Pavard had to go to the police station, where a blood test at 3:18 a.m. showed the high alcohol level.

“I made a mistake that I’ve admitted. Nobody is perfect, but I’ve learned from it,” Pavard admitted ruefully. Sports director Hasan Salihamidizic said the incident was “not worth mentioning”. The Munich I public prosecutor’s office saw things differently: because anyone who drives a car with a blood alcohol content of more than 1.1 is legally considered to be “absolutely unfit to drive” – and commits a criminal offence.

Pavard received a penalty order from the district court: He now faces a fine of two months’ salary and a whole year’s driver’s license suspension. Only because the 2018 world champion lodged an objection to this will there be a public criminal trial on Wednesday. Legally, however, he was still lucky: because from 1.6 per mille you can only get your driver’s license back if you pass the “Depperltest” (MPU).
