Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka named German Football Ambassadors for 2020

When 2020 was beating just about everyone on Earth down, Bayern Munich midfielders Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka decided to take action.

And they did so in a big way with their #WeKickCorona campaign. #WeKickCorona was organized to support charities, groups, and organizations, who were have struggled financially due to the closures and restrictions that have occurred during the pandemic.

Because of that effort, the duo was formally recognized by being named German Football Ambassadors for 2020. Kimmich and Goretzka’s #WeKickCorona effort has raised over €5 million for 570 projects. Per the release:

The two Bayern players have therefore sent out a strong message of social responsibility and have been honored by numerous sources for their commitment. Just a few weeks ago, they received the “Special Award for Exemplary Commitment to Overcoming the Coronavirus Pandemic” as part of the 2020 Bavarian Sports Awards.

Kimmich, who is currently working his way back from an injury, was elated to be acknowledged for the charitable effort.

“It’s special to be rewarded for something that isn’t directly related to football and one’s own performance. We’re happy and grateful that we, on behalf of all those who have joined and entrusted us with their work, can continue providing help with #WeKickCorona even in this difficult period,” said Kimmich.
