Bayern Munich had the ambition to advance in the DFB-Pokal, the German league cup, and therefore chose to muster the strongest possible starting eleven away against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Wednesday night.
Ideal for overtaking – and so it was. But maybe not quite in the way the audience had intended before the match. It was a crush, but surprisingly Mönchengladbach was responsible for it.
Bayern Munich lost the match 5-0. Mönchengladbach took a 3-0 lead after just 20 minutes, a result that stood up to the halftime break. After the break, Breel Embolo answered for two quick goals, which determined the end result and completed the rattle.
Borussia Mönchengladbach is thus on to the third round of the League Cup, and Bayern Munich collected their largest loss since 1978.
