The trip to Mainz has not been a pleasant one for Bayern Munich in recent years. The last three guest games in the Bundesliga were all lost, the last away win against FSV was at the beginning of February 2020.

Accordingly, the Munich team started very focused and left no doubt about the outcome of this game from the start. In the 11th minute, the guests quickly switched gears after a Mainz attack, Kingsley Coman skilfully completed the counterattack after a precise through ball from Leroy Sané.

Instead of the immediate equalizer by Jae-sung Lee (13th), which was denied by the brilliant Sven Ulreich, Harry Kane made it 2-0 after a quarter of an hour. Shortly before the half-time whistle, Mainz’ Anthony Caci was able to reduce the deficit, but Bayern responded in the second half with Leon Goretzka’s preliminary decision to make it 3-1 (59′).

Edimilson Fernandes was substituted in the 76th minute at Mainz, while Silvan Widmer was on the bench again for over 90 minutes after his long-term injury.

Guirassy continues to score – Leverkusen are leaders again

There was a lot going on in the afternoon games: no less than 13 goals were scored in the 5 places in the first half, and in the end there were 17 goals.

The biggest headlines were once again written by Stuttgart’s super photographer Serhou Guirassy. The striker scored the opening goal after a quarter of an hour in the 3-0 away win against Union Berlin – his 14th (!) goal in the 8th game. Just 15 minutes later, the 27-year-old had to be substituted with an injury. Nevertheless, it was enough for the Swabians to secure their 6th win in a row. The emotional situation was completely different at Urs Fischer’s Union, which had to leave the field as a loser for the 8th time in all competitions.

It was down to Bayer Leverkusen that Stuttgart didn’t salute from the leader’s throne. The Werkself, with Granit Xhaka in the starting line-up, won 2-1 away in Wolfsburg (Cédric Zesiger on the bench) and remains unbeaten in the Bundesliga. The decisive man for Bayer was Jeremie Frimpong, who made it 1-0 (13th) and set up Alejandro Grimaldo’s winning goal after an hour.

Leipzig’s early start and goalie assists

After two draws, RB Leipzig found its way back to winning ways. Away to newly promoted Darmstadt (without Filip Stojilkovic) the result was a 3-1 win. After just 42 seconds and Loïs Openda’s 1-0, there were already signs of a victory for the guests. In the second half, the Belgian striker doubled to make it 3-1 (72′).

In the game Hoffenheim against Frankfurt (1:3), two early goalie assists caused a stir: after just 3 minutes, Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann made it 1-0 with a long ball, and 10 minutes later his counterpart Jens Grahl equalized after. Despite falling behind early on, Eintracht turned the game around to make it 3-1 before the break.
