Bayern Munich defeated Manchester United 4:3 in the closely watched opening duel of Group A of the Champions League. Serge Gnabry scored for Bavaria in the first half, for whom it was already the seventh goal in the last six starts against English teams in the millionaire competition. However, Mathys Tel’s set-piece goal turned out to be decisive. By defeating the Red Devils, the home team improved their record balance in the basic phase of this cup competition, when they did not lose their 35th group game in a row.
The German giant entered the new year of the millionaire competition with a clear goal – to surpass last year’s maximum in a similar quarter-final, in which Bayern lost to the eventual winner from Manchester City. The Bavarian team met the team from the same city this time as well, but it was against United. So far, they experienced an embarrassing start to the season, when they lost in three games out of five.
The team from Manchester got the first big chance of the match in the fourth minute. Christian Eriksen found the rebound in the penalty area and promptly sent it to the goal, where it was caught by Sven Ulreich with a great save. In the 28th minute, after a quick action, Leroy Sané promptly fired from the edge of the box and his ground shot fell into the net.
Die Roten increased their lead after half an hour of play. Jamal Musiala went through several defenders to the penalty area, where he served the ball to Gnabry, who first cleared it behind André Onana’s back.
Four minutes after the change of sides, coach Erik ten Haga’s men were reduced. Rasmus Höjlund received a pass from Marcus Rashford in the penalty area and with the help of one of the defenders he got the ball over the goal line. In the 52nd minute, the home side were given the chance to jump back to a two-goal gap again after the video referee detected a handball inside the penalty area. Harry Kane, the summer reinforcement of the Bavarian team, stood up to the penalty and gave the goalkeeper no chance with a sharp blow to the lower left corner.
In the 78th minute, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting could have scored Bayern’s next goal, but Onana did a great job with his shot. In the 88th minute, he managed to cut down Casemiro, but returned the two-goal difference to Munich with a shot under the crossbar Tel. Casemiro added to his goal tally in the set-up and thus gave the result a final shape.
Bayern thus confirmed their role as favorites and entered Group A victoriously. In the next match, they head to Copenhagen on October 3, Manchester will welcome Galatasaray at home.
