Manuel Neuer is ready for the top Bundesliga game. Coach Vincent Kompany still leaves open the possibility of playing against Leverkusen.
According to Bayern coach Vincent Kompany, the decision about a possible deployment of Manuel Neuer in the top Bundesliga game against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday evening (6.30 p.m./Sky) has not yet been made. “Manuel is training at the moment, but we will make the final decision tomorrow,” said Kompany the day before the duel between the leaders from Munich and the double winners from Leverkusen.
New guy back in training
FC Bayern announced on Thursday that Neuer had returned to team training. The long-time goalkeeper recently trained individually. The 38-year-old decided not to play in Bremen last weekend, where Sven Ulreich represented him in the 5-0 win. “It is important that nothing changes to the Werder Bremen squad,” emphasized Kompany. If a player is not in top shape, another can replace him. He has confidence in all the players in his squad.
According to his own statements, Neuer suffered a slight injury to his thigh in the 9-2 win in the Champions League against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday last week. He left the pitch at halftime, after which Ulreich came on.
Friend: No talk about Neuer’s possible DFB return
The long-time national goalkeeper and 2014 world champion recently came into focus again because his selection successor Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona was seriously injured and will be out for months. It is not yet known whether Neuer is considering a comeback after his recent resignation from the DFB team.
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund also couldn’t say anything about it the day before the game against Leverkusen: “That’s his personal decision. We never talked about it, not even with Manu.” Freund emphasized: “He’s happy right now.”
