Thursday’s annual general meeting of the German football club Bayern Munich ended in a tumultuous scene, which was the result of a dispute over the sponsor Qatar Airways.
Participants chanted: “Hainer von”, expressing dissatisfaction with club president Herbert Hainer. He closed the general meeting during a speech by former boss Uli Hoeness. “It was the worst event I’ve ever seen in Bayerne.” said Hoeness.
Bundesliga fans have long criticized the agreement with a Qatari sponsor for human rights violations in the Asian country. Michael Otto’s spontaneous proposal to include this issue in the agenda of the General Assembly was rejected. The club’s leaders have argued in court that this item may not be part of the program and the 780 members present do not represent all 290,000.
According to the club president, Bayern will fulfill the contract with Qatar Airways, which is valid until 2023. Former goalkeeper and current chairman Oliver Kahn said that it is better to have a dialogue with Qatar than to end it. The DPA reported.
