Julian Nagelsmann took over Bayern Munich before last season and led the club to the title in the Bundesliga and victory in the German Super Cup, while there were heavy exits in the second round of the German Cup and in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Bayern Munich is currently in second place with one point to league leader Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and in the quarter-finals of the German Cup – but now chooses to change the coaching position.
During the day, it is clear that Nagelsmann is being forced out of the club, after a year and a half.
At the same time, Bayen announces that Thomas Tuchel will take over as the new head coach with immediate effect. The former Chelsea manager has signed a contract that runs until June 2025 and will lead his first training session as early as Monday.
– This is one of the most difficult decisions I have made during my time at Bayern Munich. I have had a friendly relationship with Julian from day one. I regret parting ways with Julian. But after analyzing the team’s sporting development, especially since January, we have made the decision to release him, says sporting director Hasan Salihamidžic in a statement.
– I am very grateful to Julian for what he has done for FC Bayern and I wish him all the best.
Bayern’s vd Oliver Kahn:
– When we signed Julian Nagelsmann in the summer of 2021, we were convinced that we would work with him in the long term, and that was the goal until the end. Julian shares our ambition to play successful and attractive football, but now we have come to the conclusion that the quality in our squad – despite the Bundesliga title last year – has come out too rarely, says Kahn.
– After the WC, we have played less successfully and less attractively. The big swings in our performances have cast doubt on whether we can reach our goals for the season, but also our goals for the future. That is why we have chosen to act now. Personally and on behalf of FC Bayern, I would like to thank Julian and his coaching staff, and wish them the best of luck in the future.
German Sky has reported on the reason behind the decision, claiming that the Bayern management has been unhappy with the club’s negative development in the Bundesliga recently, and feels that the players have not developed enough. Bayern are also said to be surprised that Julian Nagelsmann recently went on a skiing holiday, as the team needs to train during the national team break for the rest of the season.
The transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, in turn, has information that there have been “problems” between the coach and the big club’s board recently, and that some players have stopped trusting the coach’s tactics.
According to Football Insider and the Evening Standard, Tottenham are now interested in signing Nagelsmann as a replacement for Antonio Conte. The Telegraph has the same information and believes that Spurs will contact the German shortly.
Bayern Munich last lost to Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 away in the Bundesliga and will face league leader Borussia Dortmund at home in the league on April 1.
