Black Metal, Bob Dylan and Cypress Hill: Music from Karl Ove Knausgard’s novel “The Third Kingdom”
There is a lot about music in the new novel by Norwegian bestselling author Karl Ove Knausgard: the feelings and memories of the characters in “The Third Kingdom” are conveyed through songs. And so one remembers “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young, a piece that this character heard when he fell in love. Another is delighted when “Oh Baby” by Status Quo is suggested to him on Spotify. Through their playlists and the connection to music, the characters become approachable and authentic – a clever trick by the author. Knausgard is known for going into the smallest detail when it comes to describing (his own) everyday life – this includes musical taste and musical socialization. The black metal world is a particular focus in this novel. Knausgard himself experienced the horrific and violent excesses in the early nineties – several people from the Norwegian black metal scene lost their lives. These dark memories also flow into “The Third Kingdom” – the “normal pop taste” of a 19-year-old becomes an obsession for a black metal band…
