Germany’s Bayer has won a lawsuit brought by a man in California who said he got cancer from the herbicide Roundup.
The group has now won ten consecutive out of the last fifteen similar lawsuits. More cases are expected in the coming year.
Bayer said in a statement that the verdict was “consistent with the evidence in this case that Roundup does not cause cancer and is not responsible for plaintiff’s illness.”
The chemical group has been embroiled in a long series of lawsuits since its takeover of Monsanto in 2018. Roundup contains the controversial ingredient glyphosate, which is said to cause cancer. Approximately 165,000 claims have now been filed against the company for personal injury allegedly caused by the drug.
Bayer previously lost five lawsuits and had to pay billions in compensation to Roundup users who had developed cancer. Bayer then stated that it would appeal the verdict and emphasized that the product is safe.
Monsanto introduced Roundup in the 1970s. The component glyphosate is associated with a form of lymphatic cancer.
