Bayer Ordered to Pay 2 Billion Euros in Roundup Cancer Lawsuit

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer labeled glyphosate – the active ingredient in herbicides such as Roundup – as “probably carcinogenic to humans”. Environmental organizations have therefore been calling for a general ban for years. In Belgium, the use of glyphosate by private individuals is prohibited.

According to John McKivison, his non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, is the result of Roundup use. The judge followed that reasoning and ruled that Bayer, Monsanto’s parent company, must pay damages of 2 billion euros.

It is not the first time that Bayer has been ordered to pay such large damages, this has also happened in similar lawsuits. The group disputes the harmfulness of glyphosate and reports to the AFP news agency that it plans to appeal against the decision.

There is also discussion in Europe about the harmfulness of glyphosate. At the end of November, the European Commission extended the authorization for the controversial product for another ten years. Our country did not take a position because there is also disagreement within the Belgian government.
