Bayer Leverkusen: Will this Bundesliga coach be Alonso’s successor?

Bayer Leverkusen should already be preparing for the time after Xabi Alonso. According to a report, two potential successors are said to be at the top of the list.

While Bayer Leverkusen has returned to success this season with Xabi Alonso, behind the scenes the course could already be being set for the successful coach to say goodbye.

Alonso’s contract with the Werkself officially runs until 2026, but there is always speculation about his possible departure – especially to bigger clubs like Real Madrid or Manchester City.

For this reason, Leverkusen is already exploring the coaching market and has two promising candidates in its sights. At least that’s what the TV channel Sky reports.

Accordingly, Sebastian Hoeneß, currently coach of VfB Stuttgart, should be at the top of the list of potential successors. Hoeneß has built up a good reputation in the Bundesliga, led Stuttgart into the Champions League and made a name for himself in particular through his courageous, attacking style of play.

His contract with runner-up Stuttgart runs until 2027. According to Sky, the 42-year-old should enjoy a “high reputation” at Bayer 04.

Another candidate who is said to be very popular at Bayer 04 is Sandro Wagner, according to Sky. The 36-year-old – currently working as an assistant coach for the German national team – quickly gained a foothold in coaching after his active career and is considered one of the greatest talents in the German coaching landscape.

As Sky reports, several teams from the Premier League are said to have already inquired about Wagner. Thanks, among other things, to the support of DFB sports director and Leverkusen legend Rudi Völler, he is also said to be in great demand at Bayer 04.

Wagner is currently completing his football teaching license and could officially serve as head coach from 2025. Despite his young age, he already brings valuable experience, particularly through his work alongside Julian Nagelsmann in the national team.
