This Sunday, Bayer Leverkusen became German champions for the first time in the history of the German soccer championship. Coach Xabi Alonso’s team beat Werder Bremen 5:0 and is now 16 points ahead of FC Bayern and VfB Stuttgart.
Germany’s record champion, Bayern Munich, had so far won eleven consecutive championships, so Leverkusen’s feat marks a change in the Bundesliga.
Víctor Boniface scored the first goal from a penalty in the 25th minute, while Granit Xhaka and Florian Wirtz increased the lead after the break to complete five goals.
After defeating Werder Bremen 5-0, the team led by Spanish Xabi Alonso broke the dominance of Bayern Munich, which won the tournaments between 2013 and 2023.
