Bayer Leverkusen lost the derby against 1. FC Köln and Florian Wirtz. The national player suffers a cruciate ligament rupture.

Young National Player Florian Wirtz becomes the Bundesliga soccer club Bayer Leverkusen Missing for a long time and also having to suffer a major setback on the way to the 2022 World Cup. The 18-year-old suffered a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the derby defeat against 1. FC Köln (0-1) on Sunday, Bayer announced in the evening after an MRI scan.

Wirtz will probably be out for the rest of the season in any case, but this year the World Cup in Qatar will not take place until winter: Wirtz still has eight months until the start of the tournament.

Wirtz obviously got his left foot stuck in the grass. He smacked the grass several times with his hand and waved to the Bayer supervisors. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed that it’s not a serious injury. Get well soon, Florian,” the national team said on their Twitter channel.

Nothing was initially known about the nature of the injury. Bayer announced during the game that Wirtz would be taken to the hospital. During the long treatment break, the former Cologne native was loudly insulted by many fans in the guest block. (sid)
