Leverkusen. Victor Boniface’s injury-time goal sealed Bayer Leverkusen’s comeback win over Wolfsburg 4-3 on Sunday, another hard-fought victory for the reigning Bundesliga champions a week before their game at Bayern Munich.
Xabi Alonso’s side looked set to settle for sharing the points when Granit Xhaka struck in stoppage time. But Boniface then appeared to score the decisive goal.
Wolfsburg’s entire squad – down to one man after Yannick Gerhardt was sent off – packed the area, but Boniface found space in the middle of three opponents, turned and fired a shot past goalkeeper Kamil Grabara.
It was the second time in four games this season that Leverkusen have won in stoppage time. It was the same style as their unforgettable title-winning campaign last season.
To win this time, Leverkusen had to come from behind twice after falling one goal down.
Nordi Mukiele opened the scoring for Wolfsburg after five minutes but Leverkusen fought back through goals from Florian Wirtz – his fourth in eight days – and Jonathan Tah.
Wolfsburg restored their lead at half-time through goals from Sebastiaan Bornauw and Mattias Svanberg, but Ecuador defender Piero Hincapié levelled with a header in the 48th.
Leverkusen’s games are pure entertainment: 22 goals in four Bundesliga games, with 13 conceded, including the 3-2 defeat to Leipzig last month.
The result left Leverkusen three points behind Bayern, who have won all four of their games under new coach Vincent Kompany, scoring 16 goals and conceding three.
