“Baxerna Receives 8 Million Euro Grant for New Vaccine Development to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance”

The European network Baxerna includes VIB, UGent, UZ Gent, VUB, ULB, the French Pasteur Institute, the Radboud Medical Center from the Netherlands and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. The network received a European grant of 8 million euros to look for new vaccines as a preventive against antimicrobial resistance. It occurs when bacteria no longer respond to antibiotics. According to the World Health Organization, this is one of the main threats to global health. “Scientific estimates predict that by 2050, as many people worldwide will die from antibiotic resistance as people die from cancer today,” says Professor Francis Impens (VIB – UGent) who leads the research. “The development of this vaccine is therefore certainly necessary.”
