Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) RI declined the invitation to the coordination meeting 2024 election postponement implemented by the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Kemenko Polhukam).
RI Bawaslu member Fritz Edward Siregar said that this attitude was the decision of the RI Bawaslu plenary meeting. He said that Balikpapan Bawaslu was asked not to attend the invitation.
“Not present, either as resource person or participant,” said Fritz via text message CNNIndonesia.comSaturday (19/3).
Fritz could not reveal the reason for the RI Bawaslu to reject the invitation. He said he did not participate directly in the plenary meeting.
CNNIndonesia.com contacted other RI Bawaslu members, such as Mochamad Afifuddin, Ratna Dewi Pettalolo, and Rahmat Bagja regarding the results of the plenary meeting. However, they did not give an answer until this news was published.
The attitude of Bawaslu is different from that of the General Elections Commission (KPU). RI KPU chairman Ilham Saputra invited regional commissioners to attend.
“We invite the invited regency/city KPUs to attend and at the same time confirm the KPU’s commitment to holding elections and the 2024 elections in accordance with the constitution and applicable laws,” Ilham said via text message, Friday (18/3).
Previously, the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs invited the Balikpapan KPU and the Balikpapan Bawaslu to attend a coordination meeting on the postponement of the election. This is known from a copy of the invitation letter circulating among election observers.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD confirmed the letter. He explained that the meeting was held to confirm the government’s stance on the issue of postponing the election. He said the government was still preparing for the 2024 election.
