No wheat beer showers, no confetti rain, no emotional celebration with the families on the lawn. Even without a title party in the usual framework, FC Bayern is looking forward to being honored with the championship trophy at the end of the complicated Corona season.
“We did it, and that’s the crowning glory when the trophy is presented,” said Hansi Flick, who can hold the championship trophy again 30 years after his fourth player title.
In compliance with the strict hygiene rules, captain Manuel Neuer will be presented with the “bowl” on Saturday after the 57th Bundesliga season has ended. The stars of the German football record champion have to provide the right setting themselves. “It is important that we are present and use the rhythm for the final in Berlin,” said Flick a week before the cup final against Bayer Leverkusen. The championship is a milestone. “If you have an intermediate goal, you have to have other goals. And we have that on the team, ”said the 55-year-old.
Incidentally, Flick waves a record of Jupp Heynckes from the triple season in a win: At that time, “Super Bayern” had 16 wins in a draw in the second half of the season. “The second half of the 17 games without defeat is a big goal,” said Flick. His team missed four goals to the magical mark of 100. The league record of Gerd-Müller-Bayern is 101 goals in the 1971/72 season. “For me, the most important thing is that we play for victory in Wolfsburg. Everything else that comes with it is a thing that is not the focus at the beginning, ”said the master coach.
A week ago, Flick was able to give some stars a break in the 3-1 win against SC Freiburg. Álvaro Odriozola can play against the Lower Saxony for the third time in the Bundesliga. The full-back is on loan from Real Madrid until June 30. The originally agreed terms then also end for Ivan Perisic (Inter Milan) and Philippe Coutinho (FC Barcelona). “Of course I would also like to have the squad that we currently have available for the Champions League phase,” said Flick.
After his ankle surgery – like Niklas Süle after a cruciate ligament rupture – Coutinho had recently returned to team training and is fit again. “Philippe will be in the squad,” announced Flick. In the cup final in a week in Berlin, Thiago should also be ready for action again after a groin operation.
The title ceremony without an atmospheric fan atmosphere and just in front of a small club delegation does not sound glamorous. Bayern are proud of the eighth championship in succession and the 30th overall overall. “It feels very special, each title is special in its own way. Each season has its own story,” said central defender Jérôme Boateng. It reminded of a difficult first half of the season, sometimes seven points behind. “We fought back incredibly as a team and had an incredible series,” said Boateng.
And this series should continue. They wanted to “march again before the short vacation,” said Thomas Müller. After the Berlin Cup final there is a short break to relax. After that, the Champions League attracts, in which the final will be held on August 23 in Lisbon.
