Bavaria’s basic supply of electricity, traffic, education and the Internet is so good

Only one thing can help against this: continue to expand – and continue to promote and support the expansion in the municipalities, both in terms of fiber optics and mobile communications. And there please in the new, super-fast 5G standard!

Conclusion: stay tuned …

Gut: The numerous Bavarian funding programs are working: The digital network is better than in many federal states.

Bad: Fiber optics and the new 5G cellular standard need more push.

Education: On the one hand, you need technology – but also qualified teaching

No question about it: the challenges of homeschooling gave schools a huge boost in the direction of digitization. The Association of the Bavarian Economy (vbw) issues a good interim report to education policy in Bavaria.

For example, the server capacities of the “mebis” learning platform have increased tenfold due to Corona. Every second school in Bavaria has a fast internet connection.

50 percent of the public schools in Bavaria surf the net at gigabit speed

The other side of the coin: The other half of the schools do not have fast data lines! Here you need an even better digital infrastructure.

And when learning at home, the technical equipment of the students or those of the parents decides how well they can keep up. That leads to educational injustice. Bavaria is traditionally in a good position, as the education monitor of the New Social Market Economy initiative recently revealed.

However, longer periods of teaching on the Internet leave some students behind. The state government is addressing the problem and providing 250,000 laptops and tablets for students. There will also be 120,000 devices for teachers.

But technology alone is not enough from an association point of view. The teachers urgently need further qualification – and it must be an integral part of the curriculum at every age group that students use digital media in a self-determined and critical manner.

Conclusion: getting better …

Gut: The digitization of education has received a significant boost.

Bad: The quality of teaching depends on the teacher – and on the equipment of the students. A fast network is often lacking.

Transport: Keeping an eye on cross-border networking

Fast from here to there. We all want that. The economy also needs a well-developed transport infrastructure. It is the basis for mobility, logistics, production and, last but not least, for export. The transport networks must secure the economic prospects of the companies as well as the good accessibility of jobs.

Road, rail and water have to interact intelligently in the transport network

A lot of investments are still needed and, above all, a holistic view: for cross-border networking and intelligent interaction between modes of transport and overarching digital platforms, on the road, on the rails and on the water. When it comes to expanding the infrastructure, it is important to be open to technology, emphasizes the Association of Bavarian Business. That means, for example, more fueling and charging infrastructure for electromobility and hydrogen.

And ideas that still sound crazy today need to be considered for the future. One example is “Hyperloop”, an energy-efficient means of transport that could in future connect metropolises at high speed. The system for floating in the concrete tube is being developed by students at the Technical University of Munich. A prototype could be ready in 2021.

Conclusion: more speed …

Gut: The supply of goods and their transport work, as the crisis has now shown.

Bad: The renovation is progressing too slowly, and there is often a lack of local acceptance.
