Berlin – Under the impression of the war in Ukraine, the clubs of the Bundesliga have expressed their solidarity with the Ukrainian population with minutes of silence.
Accompanied by other actions, FC Bayern Munich won 1-0 (0-0) at Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to a goal by Leroy Sané (71st minute) and consolidated first place.
Bayer Leverkusen had previously secured themselves third place in the table with a 3-0 (1-0) win over Arminia Bielefeld. After beating Hertha BSC 3-0 (1-0), SC Freiburg is still in the middle of the race for a place in the Champions League. 1. FC Union Berlin is within Europa League range after beating FSV Mainz 05 3-1 (1-0).
1. FC Köln missed the leap to sixth place after a 1-1 (0-0) draw at bottom SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Borussia Mönchengladbach came from behind to draw 2-2 (1-2) against VfL Wolfsburg.
The dramatic situation in Ukraine after the Russian invasion was commemorated in various ways in the stadiums. In Fürth, both teams held up a banner that read: “STOP WAR. WE AGAINST WAR.” Before kick-off, Union played almost exclusively music related to war and peace. Top striker Robert Lewandowski appeared as Bayern captain with an armband in the Ukrainian national colors of blue and yellow.
Lucas Alario (30′) and Moussa Diaby (57’/81′) scored for Bayer. The Leverkusen club had refrained from playing carnival music before kick-off, and for a carnival Saturday there were remarkably few people in costumes in the stadium.
Jonas Wind (6th) gave Wolfsburg the lead in Mönchengladbach. Sebastiaan Bornauw (33′) followed up before Marcus Thuram (42′) scored the first goal before the break. Breel Embolo (82nd) equalized.
Union had an early advantage after Genki Haraguchi’s goal (8′). It was Berlin’s first goal after 283 minutes without a goal in the Bundesliga. Sheraldo Becker (56′) and Taiwo Awoniyi (75′) scored after the break. Delano Burgzorg’s Mainz goal (90′) came too late.
Hertha fell behind after the penalty kick by Freiburg’s Vincenzo Grifo (12th). Kevin Schade (83rd) scored the second, Lucas Höler (86th) the third SC goal. Cologne only took the lead in Fürth in the second half thanks to a goal by Florian Kainz (53′), Sebastian Griesbeck (69′) equalised.
