“Battlefield 2042” will soon be released on PS5, Xbox Series X / S, PC and previous generation consoles (PS4 and Xbox One.) EA and Dice have for the occasion added support for so-called cross-play and upgrades between console generations, but you have to insure you that you have purchased the correct version of the game in order to take advantage of the latter.
Cross-play allows players from different platforms to play online together, while the ability to upgrade between console generations (often called cross-gen) depends on whether you have to pay for the upgrade if, for example, you have a PS4 copy of a game (in this case “Battlefield 2042”) and buys a PS5.

If you are looking for information about EA allows you to upgrade for free from the previous generation consoles to the next generation, then we can announce that the company has announced that this will apply to the so-called “cross-gen bundle” variants of “Battlefield 2042”. Previously, this only applied to the (expensive) Ultimate and Gold versions of the game, but in a fresh one blog posts on EA’s websites The development team explained that digital “cross-gen” versions of the game will work across generations.
If you have already pre-ordered the standard version of “Battlefield 2042”, on the previous generation consoles, then you can not upgrade for free to the next generation – you must therefore buy “Battlefield 2042” again if you plan to change console. The next-generation variant (with the option of cross-play) costs NOK 100 extra (NOK 799 versus NOK 699).
What plans does EA have for gaming across console generations in “Battlefield 2042”?
When it comes to so-called cross-play, there will be two groups of players. One group consists of players on PS5, Xbox Series X / S and PC, who will all be able to play together; while gamers on previous generation consoles, PS4 and Xbox One will form the second group. EA chooses to do so due to the limitations of the hardware of the previous generation. For example, you can only play 64 players simultaneously on the older consoles, while the next-generation platforms can handle 128 simultaneous players.
It is also worth mentioning that you will get a place in the open beta test that takes place now if you pre-order (these days with exclusive access take place between 6 and 7 October, while everyone else will have access from the 8th)
It is a bit disappointing, however, that you can not create your own groupings with friends across platforms yet, so if you want to play in the beta, it will mostly be with friends on the same console (or on PC).
“Battlefield 2042” still supports cross-platform upgrades. No matter what platform you play on, you will be able to store your progress on the same account, so if you come across a raft weapon, then there is nothing in the way of using this on both PC and PS5, for example.

DICE has, to put it mildly, not always been as lucky with its launches throughout. For the most part, the games have seemed somewhat unpolished. “Battlefield V” and «Battlefield 4» were slightly unstable in the starting pit. Software errors, poor performance and game mechanical balance problems have followed the series with each new game, which has led to many an update from DICE before things sit properly.
We hope that “Battlefield 2042” represents a new chapter for the Swedish developer. At the same time, we know that a lot has already come adverse feedback regarding performance in the open beta version – but you almost have to expect that, given that the very point of a beta is to test the game, so that you can correct any errors before launch. We hope most things are in order before “Battlefield 2042” hits stores in November.
Fortunately, DICE has already given us an insight into how the game works on the older consoles, which we appreciate, given the eternal mess CD Projekt Red took care of when they launched “Cyberpunk 2077”.
